    Description

1859 Steinway & Sons Square Grand Piano,
    Empire Style with
Rosewood Case & Remarkable Custom Painted Cast Iron Plate
Restored, Major Reuben Webster Millsaps Provenance
    Item Description & Condition Details.
A Steinway & Sons square grand piano in the early Empire style acquired by the current owner’s family from the estate of Reuben Webster Millsaps at the turn of the 20
    th
century (ca. 1900).  R. W. Millsaps was the founder of Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi and attained the rank of Major in the Confederate army; this piano was originally in his Brookhaven, Mississippi residence.  The finish on the body of the piano was restored in 1982, features a hand painted & detailed cast iron plate, and underwent a complete functional restoration by a Jackson, Mississippi-based expert less than 5 years ago.  Restoration work included new strings, felts, leather, bushings, springs, recovered, repaired/replaced hammers (as needed), refurbished and repaired action, and faux ivory keys.
Overall, the piano is in exceptional condition, fully functional, and plays beautifully with the following issues noted: a small break in the music rest; two scratches on the top of the case; the hinged top cover is not currently properly attached to the chassis
