    Description

COOPER UNION'S Most Prominent Graduate : THOMAS EDISON.
Extremely rare medals from Cooper Union College in New York (originally known as Cooper Union for the Advancement of Sciences and Art.) : one BRONZE MEDAL, one SILVER MEDAL.
These belonged to my great-great-great grandmother who graduated from the school in 1875. She was a student in the Women's Art Studies Program at the college.
They were presented to her in recognition of her drawing ability. One side of the silver medal is inscribed with:   AWARDED  -  TO  -  Mollie Bell  -  SD  -  Drawing from cast  -  1873.  A laurel wreath adorns the left, right, and bottom edges of this side. The other side has:  Cooper Union  -  NEW YORK  -  Qui non proficit deficit  -  FOUNDED  -  MAY 25th 1859.
    .
The bronze coin has:   AWARDED  -  TO  -  S.D.  -  Mollie Bell  -  DRAWING  -  1875.  Once again a laurel wreath adorns the left, right, and bottom edges of this side.  The other side contains:  Cooper Union  -  NEW YORK  -  Qui non proficit deficit  -  FOUNDED  -  MAY 25th 1859.
Both medals measure approximately 3.5 cm in diameter. Each medal is mounted in a matching bezel with a matching bail/bale. Original green ribbons that came with the medals. are here, but torn and fragmented.
"Qui non proficit deficit" is a Latin proverb that translates as "he who does not go forward, loses  ground."
